Starting our homestead

a blank slate

I grew up in a small town on a dead-end road, impatiently waiting to grow up and get out into the big world. The idea of moving away from my parents and enjoy freedom was so enticing I couldn’t get out fast enough. Fast forward 7 years later and city living wasn’t all it was cracked up to be. My husband and I were living in a tiny home, with no yard, in the middle of a busy town with two kids. We yearned to be outside but were trapped inside. Crime in a city is also much more prevalent than it was growing up in a small rural area. So, my husband and I began looking into different options to move our family somewhere more comfortable. That’s when my parents gave us the offer to gift us a piece of their land. We jumped at the opportunity, and so I’m back where I began. Right back home. And I’ve discovered just how beautiful and magical being a woodland hermit can be.

the lake

Did I mention we live right by a lake? This to me is one of the most exciting aspects of our new adventure. I love the wildlife that living near a body of water brings in. We have many different birds that fly over our land every day, one of my favorites being the sandhill crane. It’s an amazing experience being outside in the early morning with a cup of coffee and hearing their calls overhead. My husband and I also love to kayak, and it’s so easy to just drag them down to the lake and hop in. We’re determined to do this more often, it’s a great way to reset and connect with nature.

the cattails

Behind our property runs a train track through the wetland. So many different animals use these cattails, it supports such a vast variety of life. It does mean that half our land is marshy, but it makes for such a beautiful environment. Another perk is that this means there won’t be any buildings going up behind our home, so we won’t lose this breathtaking view that we will have right on our back deck. I just can’t get over how wonderful it’s going to be in the early morning, waking up to this.

So, there you have it. This is our sanctuary. It’s going to be a long process getting it to be where we want it, but one that we will enjoy. Creating gardens, raising livestock, growing our own food, and just reconnecting with nature. I am currently working on some plans for the future garden layout, and I plan on sharing that before too long. We also have land cleared and our house going up! I’ll share that process as well here soon.

Welcome to the Woodland Hermit.
